About the Golf Classic

The Golf Classic will again be held at the Minisceongo Golf Course in Pomona, NY. It is a Private Course located just a 15-minute drive northwest of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The cost for the event is $150, which includes greens fees, cart, practice range basket, complimentary gifts, and a buffet dinner. Once again, we will offer “Lunch on-the Turn” Hot Dogs, Chips with Water and Soft Drinks outside the Club House.  We will have a Special Prize for the winner of this year’s Putting Contest as well.

Once again we will host a Senior Division of play for those foursomes who's age totals 248 years as of 5/5/08. We will be playing a Scramble Format, which enables participants of all levels to enjoy an enriching day and awarding prizes for low gross in both regular and Senior Divisions. Registrations for singles, doubles, or threesomes will be matched into foursomes. With such a great course, be sure to invite some friends and be sure to register early as we expect a great crowd!

History

The first Camp Spofford Golf Classic was held in the spring of 1991 with a group of 40 individuals who gathered together for Christ-Centered fellowship, fun, and encouragement in their Christian walk. Since its inception, the Golf Classic has grown consistently in participants and outreach, and presently averages about 110-120 players each year, providing Christian Fellowship with a purpose.

As the Camp Spofford Golf Classic continues to grow, our goals have remained consistent throughout:

Camper Scholarship Fund

Since 1997 the Camper Scholarship Fund, established through the Golf Classic, has assisted in providing full and partial scholarships to families who could not afford to send their children to camp for a week. Over 400 scholarships have been presented since the development of this fund. And through this, these kids were able to encounter the "Spofford Experience," encompassing the presentation of the Word of God and plan of salvation, as well as His love through the beauty of His creation and Camp's Staff. (Note: People are welcome to donate to the Camper Scholarship fund without having to participate in the Golf Outing.)

It is exhilarating to see, read and hear of the impact this ministry has had on the hearts and lives of campers made available through this program. This has been made evident through personal phone calls, the exchange of letters, and school presentations following the camp experience.

They also give leadership to three other AIA couples who serve in the New York metropolitan area.

George received an undergraduate degree in business administration from American University in 1976 and a master’s degree in Biblical studies in 1990 from the International School of Theology.  Cyndy earned a degree in music education with a voice and piano emphasis from Carson-Newman College in 1977.  They were married in June of 1977.

Prior to their current responsibilities, George and Cyndy fulfilled similar duties for six years with the New York Mets and Jets.  From 1976 -1990, they worked as campus ministers beginning at the University of Georgia, continuing at Marshall University, and then concluding their campus work at Rutgers University.

George and Cyndy have two married daughters (Kelly and Emily), a college aged daughter (Mary), and a daughter in high school (Allison) and reside in Oradell, New Jersey.
