News & Updates

General Update (5/27/08)

Today was another milestone as we continue to progress after the fire that took our chapel, now almost 8 months ago. The shell of the building that was there is now no more, and the tent that will serve as our place of worship this summer stands to the right of this spot. We had our first retreat in the tent over Memorial Day Weekend and it served well, though it is not nearly as sound-proof as our former chapel. We will have to be conscious of this fact over the summer as we seek to live in harmony with our neighbors.

Regarding the building of a new chapel, with our Master Plan completed, the Capital Campaign continues to ramp up. Our office staff are busy with a lot of the leg work to launch it. We continue to be blessed by the outpouring of support from the Camp Spofford Family! You will be sure to hear more details this summer.

In other areas, Monadnock is now nearly converted into two girls camper cabins. We have enlarged it and put in new bunks. The sound of saws and hammers continues throughout the day as Dave, Bob, and our volunteers plug away at the job in order to finish in time for summer. It's a good thing, as our girls spots are disappearing quickly. If you have any girls who would like to come to camp, we still have spaces in our Sports and Basketball weeks. No expertise or physical prowess necessary! We're only looking for kids who hope to have a fun time at camp! We also have spaces in nearly all sessions for boys, though these are disappearing quickly as well. Please call or email for availability.

We have moved back down to the dining hall for all of our meals after a long winter in Knute's. Some much-needed repairs to the kitchen floor have been completed, and it looks great!

Only three more weeks until we kick off Staff Week 2008!!! We look forward to another great summer as it approaches quickly. We hope to see you here!

General Update (5/10/08)

The Camp Spofford Golf Classic Tournament was a great success on Monday the 5th of May. Last year we had 113 participants, this year we had 134. The weather was excellent as was the fellowship while chasing the elusive little white ball around the Minisceongo Golf club. We are grateful to the Golf Committee for their hard work in making it such a successful event. Committee members are: Matt Battle, Paul Sokel, Jim Dougherty, Pete Synder, Dick Waddel, Scott Solvang, Dave Levesque, Dave Larsen and Chairman John Osmundsen. See pictures HERE!

The first workday of the spring was a great showing with 34 people coming to assist us in preparing for the summer of 08. Many projects were tackled. An addition to Mondanock made big strides. Mondanock is being converted into a Girl Camper Cabin. The Lower Girls Staff Cabin has been converted into another Girl Camper Cabin. It was painted and carpeted after the internal renovations were completed. The Camp is continuing in its quest to go to a "one key facility". This weekend Cheshire and the Chalet were re-keyed. The beach furniture and watercraft were returned to the Waterfront. Winter damage to our tree limbs were picked up all around camp. The kitchen floor continues with an annual floor repair, this time in rear entrance to the kitchen. Minor repairs were made to various other buildings.

We still have many more projects to complete prior to the summer. We have a local church Youth Group coming on Sat. May 17, if you can come up that day to work that would be great. Our next WORK-DAY is May 23-25. Memorial Day Weekend is always a big event as we push to prepare. Please call to make a reservation if you plan on coming for more than the day. As always, if you can come at any time your schedule permits, call Dave at (603) 809-0294 or Dan at (603) 738-1320 and they will arrange with you a mutually convenient time.

Chapel Update and more(4/10/08)
Negotiations with our Insurance Carrier has come to an amiable conclusion in regards to the Chapel. They have declared the building a "total loss" and will therefore send to Camp the remaining insured amount, which is a net of $299,000. They have covered our "contents" loss already and now we need to remove the "Chapel debris". We are covered with "Business Loss" insurance as well so we need to address the temporary chapel housing for this summer.

The Annual Banquet saw about 200 "Spoffordites"come to hear and see our Projected Plans for the future of Camp. We viewed a great DVD which you can view on line. Please note the building designs of the Chapel & Dinning Hall are "conceptual designs" only. We are excited to pursue this process as the Lord leads us in this endeavor.

The Camp will be launching a Capital Campaign in due time as we gather information and firm up what we "need & want" in our Chapel and Dinning Hall as well as other buildings in our Master Plan.

New Addition to Camp Family (4/4/08)
Becky Russo, our Camp's Office Manage is now on Maternity leave due to the birth of her daughter Jillian Josephine. She was 18 1/2 inches and 6lbs 11oz and very beautiful. Mom is doing great and would appreciate your prayers on their behalf. In her absence, Karen Rathbun will be job sharing the Office duties so that Rookie doesn't have to manage the office by himself with Dan's assistance.
Summer 2008 Youth Camp Update (3/18/08)
