The 25th Annual Golf Classic

Over one hundred golfers gathered at the NJ National Golf Course in Basking Ridge, NJ, to golf for the purpose of giving the gift of camp to kids.  The sun was out, the wind was brisk, and we had a great time, as you can see by the photos below.  Through the generous donations of business, church and personal donations, over $30,000 was raised in hole sponsors that will be distributed to campers who cannot afford the cost of camp this summer.  We have many families who have already filled out scholarship applications and we can now contact them and tell them they can come!

The need for scholarship money continues to grow.  Our camp director Peter says, “Giving kids a week of camp is also giving them the opportunity to be loved, to be heard, and to feel that they belong… and the greatest gift we can ever give a child, however, is the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  For many kids, this will be the greatest week of their life.  It will be the time they meet Jesus. “

Camp Spofford hosts two golfing events each year, and the money raised goes to the Camper Scholarship Fund.  The next event is the “Gourmet Golf Outing,” which will be held at Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, NH, on Friday, September 29th.  Please visit our “Golf” page on our website to register for that.

CAMP SPOFFORD ANNOUNCES NEW CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Building A Strong Foundation

Summer of 2016 unveiled the new Capital Campaign to raise funds for some improvements around camp.  These improvements include:

  • New pontoon boat
  • Updated ski boat
  • New gym floor
  • Pay off Granite Lodge

We are so excited to share with you the news that funds have been raised for a NEW PONTOON BOAT and UPDATED SKI BOAT!  The pontoon boat was delivered in early September and some happy pastor’s attending our Pastor’s Retreat were some of the first to try it out. (As you can see in the photo, Ben Tabone joined them, too.)photo

The heart of Camp Spofford is to reach kids and families with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  There are many ways we do this, whether through exceptional programs, speakers, summer staff,  or food and activities.  In recent years, God has blessed us with growing numbers in Family Camp, Youth Camp, and Retreats.  To accommodate this growth, we came up with the four components of the Capital Campaign.  If you would like to receive a booklet that explains in detail the campaign, please contact us at info@campspofford.org

Family Camp New Speakers 2016

Are you coming to Family Camp this summer?

Each week of Family Camp at Camp Spofford we have the pleasure of having a pastor or spiritual leader teach us during chapel times.  While the kids are in their age appropriate programs, the adults get some special treatment, too.  These speakers bring us the spiritual nourishment that edifies us so that we can be a change agent and light in our communities, work and homes.  There is nothing quite like having an entire week of going to chapel, then on to coffee hour in front of the dining hall, and then an afternoon of relaxing on the beach.

This year we welcome some new speakers to Camp Spofford!  You may recognize them.  Each have been to camp before but never as a Family Camp speaker.  Read on to see if you are here the week that they are…

mhealyMICHAEL HEALY- FAMILY CAMP WEEK

Warm greetings from Bonnie, Scotland!  Below, you will see a photo of my wife Anne and I at Loch Lomond,  and a second of Loch Lomond itself because it is so beautiful!  We have three sons.  Kyle is married to Amanda. They have a son name Andrew and another baby on the way who should arrive during Week 6 or thereabouts! Kyle serves as tech director for a large Church in Bellingham, Washington State.  My second son is David,  married to Pauline. They have a son Oliver and live about 5 miles away from us. Our youngest, Jonny, lives about 8 miles away in Glasgow City Centre.

mhealy2A little bit about me… I came to faith over 40 years ago. I am still overwhelmed when I think of how God reached out and touched my life. He used the birth of a lamb! As I process it all these years later, I can only say that God’s invisible world touched my visible world in that moment. It was several years before I came to understand that the Lord paid the debt incurred by my sin on the cross.

Anne and I are so looking forward to being at Camp Spofford. We were there last year and felt as though we were on holy ground

bmarvelBRYAN MARVEL – LABOR DAY WEEKEND

I’m the Senior Pastor of Meadowbrook Church in Milwaukee, WI. This is a new role for me as I accepted the position earlier this year. When I’m not preaching or pastoring I love spending time with my family. I’ve has been married to my beautiful wife Becky for 10 years. We have three wonderful girls, Kate (5), Emma (4), Lucy (2), who keep us very busy. In addition to family time, my wife and I love to stay active. Over the last few years she and I have run in 4 half marathons.

Lately, God has been teaching me about the power of surrender. It’s only when we fully give ourselves to God that His power and might are able to fully work in and through us. I’m looking forward to speaking at camp this summer over Labor Day weekend.

Meet Greg Carlson

For those of you coming to Family Camp week 3 (July 18-25), a speaker new to most of us will be here.  Greg Carlson will join us from Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois. Here’s a little bio about Greg for all of you who will be here that week.

So who is Greg?

I am a Professor of Christian Ministries at Trinity International University.  I am also an author, youth and family ministry consultant, pastor, and seminar leader living in the Chicago area.  My wife Donna and I are the proud parents of 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law.

What’s your background?

I was born in Sioux City, Iowa, but call Nebraska (where I grew up) my home state.  I was introduced to the Lord by my parents at the age of 10, and found in Jesus Christ a life-long Friend and Savior.  That commitment was strengthened during a 9 month recuperation from a severe farm accident during high school.

Lakeside: The Renovation

This was once the garage.

This was once the garage.

The garage attached to Lakeside was renovated this past year, and finished just in time for the summer season.  Now it is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom annex that has a separate entrance from Lakeside.  This addition makes Lakeside a great weekly rental for large or extended families.  The entire accommodation now sleeps just over 20 people.

Come take a peek inside the annex…

The 22nd Annual Camp Spofford Golf Classic

IMG_1737_001

On Monday, May 19th, 2014 at the Minisceongo Golf Club in Pomona, NY, a group of men and women gathered for a day of golf. But this wasn’t just any day of golf. The Camp Spofford Golf Classic exists to raise funds for the Camper Scholarship Fund. Every summer, campers can receive scholarships to help them pay for camp. Over the past 10 years, in fact, the Camper Scholarship Fund has helped over 800 families. This is due in a large part to what happens every year at our Golf Classic.

“I cannot thank you enough for helping us send kids to camp each summer by supporting the 2014 Camp Spofford Golf Outing,” says Peter Fiorello. “It is our passion and heart’s desire to impact campers to become life-long followers of Jesus Christ. Due to the tireless efforts of the Golf Committee and your participation, we will celebrate as many more kids will be able to come to camp this summer!”

It was a sunny day, a great turnout, and a successful fundraiser. We thank all of you who golfed, volunteered, donated, or sponsored the event. We hope to see you next year!

The office has moved…

front gym

Thanks to the many volunteers, donations, time and skills, the office has moved from its old location next to the dining hall to the second floor of the gymnasium’s lobby. Karen, Mary, and Peter now have probably some of the best views of camp and Spofford Lake, peering out the new windows as they look out onto the ball field. There is even an inside window (pictured here) that looks down into the gym, so someone will always be watching…photo (2)

Moving the office to this location is all part of the preparation for our new Dining Hall project. The plan is for the new dining hall to be bigger than its original size, taking over the spot where the old office building was. Camp had to find a new place for the office; and this is what transpired. It makes use of a great space and transforms the gym lobby into a welcome center.  crane

Remember this photo from back in September? A crew from Volunteer Christian Builders came for two weeks, camping out on the ballfield in their RV’s. They assisted in the exciting venture of lifting off the roof (with the help of a crane, that is) and laying down the second floor.  Walls that had been prebuilt were put into place with the crane. Then, the original roof was re-installed.

securedownload Then, Dave and Bob, electricians, stoneworkers, window installers, and many volunteers (thank you, thank you!) took over the painstaking work of getting the new office done. A few finishing touches still need to be wrapped up, but now that paint is on the walls, new carpet has been laid (carpet that was all donated) and desks and computers have been moved in, it feels good. Things still look a little sparse. We are still working out what goes where. But the new office definitely has a great feel to it and looks like it was always meant to be in this new location. And, it being February/March and very cold, everyone is thankful for central heat. The old office didn’t have adequate heating and relied mainly on space heaters.

photoThe original gym lobby is now divided into two distinct rooms.  The left side (pictured here on the left) is the main entry way to the gymnasium.  The right side is now the registration area and will soon share space with the new home of the gift shop!  So, whether you come here during the summer or are a guest for retreat season, we look forward to checking you in at the new location!

New Changes in Summer Staff

Exciting changes are in store for this summer!

Peter Fiorello, Camp Director, explains, “As more campers and families come to camp every summer, the number of staff we hire grows, too.  In the past, one Head of Boys and one Head of Girls is responsible for supervising around 20 of our high school staff.  That is a 1 to 20 ratio.  Compare that to our overnight youth camp, where we have learned that the best possible scenario is one counselor for every 4-5 campers.  It works and it works well.  So, why not do the same for our own teen staff?”
